Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani is a noted industrialist, businessman, serial entrepreneur and philanthropist. He is known among his fellow colleagues and industry partners to be transparent, ethical and moral. Similarly, he is famous among the local citizens for his charity works, philanthropic activities as well as engaging in activities for the welfare and development of the local economy, such as building of factories, plants or banks with specific focus towards the underdeveloped sections of the society. As a result, these activities of Dr. Mahtani have made him a target of numerous individuals and associations, especially those who are always looking towards corrupt practices and illegal activities.
As per the reports, Honourable Justice Mr. Mumba Malila who is the Supreme Court Judge of Zambian Supreme Court came forward recently to testify in one case related to Tribunal case which occurred in the year 2016. In his testimony, a major issue which was raised was related to Dr. Rajan Mahtani. In his testimony, the judge has stated that during the 2012 case, Mr. Malila requested to drop the charges and prosecution against Dr. Rajan Mahtani. He was the Attorney General of the RoZ (Republic of Zambia) at that time and raised a concern regarding the matter of public policy. As per his testimony, few suspicious individuals and groups were found to be strong arming the legal system and influence the system from outside, demanding prosecution of Dr. Rajan Mahtani even though there were no evidence for a prosecution. As a result, the opinion of entering ‘nolle prosequi’ was requested in this matter.
However, the matter was not taken in a justifiable manner during that time which raises question on the ability of the law and government to make transparent decisions. This step-forward from the Supreme Court of Zambia is a positive step-forward towards improving the constitution and government of Zambia and helping honest and ethical businessman like Dr. Mahtani in carrying out their ethical business practices without fear and difficulty.
